When Life Gets Tough, We Ride It Out!

Retirement Services:

We provide horses with a happy, safe, and sensitive environment to retire in.

The aged and infirm, crippled and blind, barren or pregnant, from ponies to draft horses, the famous and the forgotten ...  all horses are welcome through our gates.*

Horses who have spent their lives serving people and who deserve to be treated with dignity and respect in their senior years.

*With exception to those horses who are in constant and/or chronic pain and those who are exceptionally dangerous to handle

The SCR standards for animal care are:

1.      Life Enrichment - The first imperative against which all decisions regarding the care and handling of nonhuman creatures should be measured is life enrichment. An enriched life is a life that consists of:

Shelter, Nourishment, Health Care, Play, Companionship, Dignity and Respect.

2.      Safe Environment - The facility should be designed for animal life enrichment. From the front gate to the end of the property line, there should be a sense of safety and peace. Animal areas should be designed for spacious, happy living and no animal should be housed alone. Grounds need to be clean and open. Humans and creatures should coexist in a peaceful setting.

We provide a facility where the horses can have comfortable, enriched lives.

Aged Horses - Many horses, after spending years serving people faithfully, are not retired, but are inhumanely disposed off. They are sold to rental stables, research groups, slaughter buyers, or euthanized to make room for younger horses. This is a violation of the trust they have so graciously placed in us and we believe the aged horse deserves to be provided with the dignity and respect it has earned.

Lifetime Commitment - Part of valuing a horse, or any animal we make part of our family, is a lifetime commitment. We believe no one should bring a horse into their lives unless they plan on providing for that animal. This includes making sure the horse is provided for at all times. We do not believe a commitment includes “shipping” a horse when it is no longer useful.

Over-breeding - The hard facts regarding horses today is that there are more horses than there are responsible and adequate homes. This could be”remedied”, as many  horses are purposely over-bred for profit resulting in many inferior quality horses flooding the market. The result of too many horses than the market can handle can be seen at any auction sale or slaughterhouse.
